 2018 Preview 


       Hokes Bluff completed the 2017 season with a 10-3 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region five, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Hokes Bluff lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Fayette County team by a score of 34-27.

       The Eagles won as many games as in any season since 2004.

       Since 2010, Hokes Bluff has gone a combined 36-51. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hokes Bluff has managed to compile a record of 152-116. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 4A and 122nd in the AHSAA.




       The Eagles are led by head coach Michael Robertson who is entering his twenty-third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 143-104 over the past twenty-two seasons at Hokes Bluff. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times. They have won one region crown with Coach Robertson. Coach Robertson led Hokes Bluff to a state championship in 2001.

       Coach Robertson's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-two season stands at 143-104 (57.9%). His 143 wins rank 30th among active coaches in the AHSAA.

       Coach Robertson needs seven wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

       The Hokes Bluff Eagles will play in Class 4A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Eagles remain in 4A but move from region five over to region six.

       Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Eagles should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Eagles open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Thursday, August 30 at Barney Hood Stadium. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 6A region seven. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Glencoe by a score of 56-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Hokes Bluff and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 74 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 39-32-3 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2017 with Hokes Bluff winning by a score of 30-7.

       Hokes Bluff returns 4A All-State  defensive back Ashton Gulledge. He was named to the second team last season. The Eagles also return  running back Darrian Meads. He was named to the first team. The Eagles also return  offensive lineman Jake Busch. He was named to the second team.

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
